The University Research Priority Program (URPP) Language and Space at the University of Zurich focuses on communication as linked to physical, social and perceptual space, through research on dialect/language contact as well as on interactional situations. The URPP approaches relations between language and space with cutting-edge technology, combining insights from dialectology with language typology and interactional linguistics. Particular emphasis is placed on crossing traditional subdisciplinary boundaries and the URPP combines research in computational linguistics, geographic information science, general linguistics, Romance studies, German studies, Slavic studies, English studies, and Sinology.
The URPP is now seeking applicants for a PhD position which will focus specifically on issues of areal diffusion and language contact, using corpus / computational linguistic methodology. The PhD candidate will be expected to conduct research under the supervision of an interdisciplinary team.
The PhD candidate will work in the CorpusLab, one of three research laboratories set up as part of the URPP (alongside the VideoLab and the GISLab). Additionally to excellent dissertation research, the successful candidate will also assist in delivering support to members of the URPP in the area of corpus / computational linguistics. The PhD candidate will also be a member of a larger research group that focuses on areal aspects of language. For more information, see: www.spur.uzh.ch
