Assistant or Associate Professor
Applied Linguistics and Psychometrics

The English Department at Iowa State University is seeking applications for an Assistant or Associate Professor of language assessment with an emphasis in 1) the use of modern psychometric approaches (e.g., item response theory and generalizability theory) to evaluate the reliability of new forms of assessments, 2) inventing innovative language assessments based on exploration of new constructs of language ability demanded by the use of technology and multimodality.  

At the undergraduate level the candidate will teach courses in linguistics and ESL.  At the graduate level the candidate will teach courses in the Ph.D. program in applied linguistics and technology and in the MA program in TESL/applied linguistics.  Graduate courses may include second language assessment, second language acquisition or applied linguistics research methods, according to specialty.  This position will begin with a 2/2 teaching load.

Research areas of particular interest include assessments using natural language processing, assessment of second language, assessment of language for specific purposes (e.g., discipline specific language), second language acquisition, and statistical approaches to the study of language teaching and learning.

Ph.D. in applied linguistics, psychometrics or related field and demonstrated strength for excellence in research and effectiveness in teaching required for Assistant Professor, tenure-track; Ph.D. in applied linguistics, psychometrics or related field, and in addition to the above, a demonstrated record of accomplishments in scholarship, including an outstanding publication record, and effectiveness in teaching required for Associate Professor, with tenure.  Preferred qualifications include ESL teaching and assessment experience, publications, and work on externally funded research projects.  Beginning August 2014.
