Job Reference Number: UOS007344
Contract Type: Fixed-term for 24 months
Faculty: Faculty of Engineering
Department: Department of Computer Science
Salary: Grade 7 £28,685 - £36,298 per annum.
Closing Date: 8th November 2013 (applications after this date may be
considered, depending on response)
The Departments of Computer Science and Journalism have two positions
for Research Associates in Natural Language Processing. The positions
are supported by the externally funded SENSEI research project,
supported by the European Commission as part of FP7.
The SENSEI project is a multi-site, multi-disciplinary project involving
researchers in language processing and journalism and industrial
partners in the call centre, social media monitoring and news media
businesses. The project aims to develop novel methods to extract,
summarize/aggregate and present information from very large volumes of
conversational data, specifically, transcriptions of call centre
conversations and reader comment in on-line news. It addresses the new
area of conversation analytics. While Sheffield will participate in all
aspects of the project, we have specific responsibilities for work on
summarization and on defining, in conjunction with journalists and news
organizations, the requirements for the reader comment scenario and
creating a gold standard reference corpus of comment thread summaries.
Given the project's aims, a strong background in natural language
processing (NLP)/computational linguistics (CL) is essential, as is
knowledge of machine learning based techniques as used in NLP/CL. Strong
programming skills in Java and Python are also essential. Experience
with some or all of the following specific sub-areas in NLP/CL is
desirable: information extraction/text mining, NL
generation/summarisation, dialogue understanding. As at least one of the
applicants will need to work with journalists to define the reader
comment scenario and manage the creation of gold standard data for it,
experience with user requirements gathering and with creating annotated
corpora for evaluation within NLP is highly desirable. The successful
candidates will have strong publication track records, commensurate with
their level of experience, and experience with multi-site collaborative
projects.
This is an opportunity to work in a well-connected international team
with world-leading reputations in Natural Language Processing. The NLP
at Sheffield group is well known internationally for its research, and
is one of the largest research groups in computational linguistics and
text engineering in the UK. The Sheffield journalism department draws
for its research on its members wide experience of UK and international
practice in newspapers, magazines, broadcasting and online publications.
This post is fixed-term for 24 months, in the first instance.
Applications after the closing date (November 8, 2013) may be
considered, depending on the level of response.
