HUMAN LANGUAGE TECHNOLOGY POSITION AT THE UNIVERSITY OF ESSEX

A KTP Associate position in Human Language Technology (HLT) (Natural
Language Processing) is available in the Language and Computation
(L&C) Group at the University of Essex, School of Computer Science and
Electronic Engineering.

The position is supported by a new KTP project between L&C and
Minority Rights Group, a NGO based in central London. In the project,
HLT techniques will be used to develop a civilian-led monitoring
system in areas of conflict, such as Iraq.

About the NGO

The Minority Rights Group

is a charity which seeks to promote the rights of minorities and
indigenous peoples worldwide by undertaking human rights research and
publishing, training and capacity-building of NGOs on the ground, and
international advocacy and litigation.

About L&C

The Language and Computation Group at the University of Essex

is one of the best known HLT/NLP teams in the UK, with an international
reputation in information extraction, information retrieval,
summarization, crowdsourcing, and multilingual HLT, in particular
Arabic NLP.  The University is located in a beautiful area of the
country, with easy access to London and to the rest of Europe through
Stansted airport.

The role of the KTP Associate

In the project we will use techniques including text classification
methods, information extraction methods such as geotagging, entity
disambiguation and event extraction (including from text messages /
blogs) and techniques for collecting and comparing multiple reports
about the same event to support the MRG team in their analysis of
reports from conflict areas in particular from Arabic countries. The
information extracted from the text will be analysed  using
open-source platforms for integrating information from multiple
sources such as Ushahidi:

We are therefore looking for candidates with a a strong background in
HLT/NLP/computational linguistics (CL) and in-depth knowledge of
machine learning techniques as used in HLT/NLP. Strong programming
skills in Java are essential. Knowledge of Arabic highly desirable but 
not essential.
Experience with some or all of the following is also highly desirable:
information extraction/text mining,
text classification, document clustering, platforms such as Ushahidi,
crowdsourcing, evaluation methodologies.  The ideal candidate will have 
an MSc and
preferably a PhD with a focus in HLT and experience of an extensive range
of HLT techniques.

About the position

The position will be for 36 months, starting from as soon as possible
after April 1st, 2014. The salary will be in the range £25,000-£30,000
per annum depending on experience.
