Requisition No.: 119/2014

2. Academic Staff Member (PhD student)
Requisition No.: 120/2014

The two positions will be part of the new DFG-funded project
"Efficient statistical parsing and decoding for expressive grammar
formalisms using tree automata". This project applies methods from
automata theory to statistical parsing with grammar formalisms that
are more expressive than PCFGs. It will be carried out at the
University of Potsdam in close cooperation with Prof. Mark Johnson
(Macquarie University) and Dr. Marco Kuhlmann (Linköping University),
and will involve regular research visits to Australia and Sweden.

The post-doctoral position is for 40 hours per week. The salary scale
is 13 TVL (Area East). A successful candidate should have proven
expertise in statistical parsing, machine translation, computational
semantics, automata theory, or a related topic, and should hold or be
about to obtain a PhD in computational linguistics, computer science,
or a related field.

The PhD student position is for 30 hours per week. The salary scale is
13 TVL (Area East, 75%). A successful candidate should hold or be
about to obtain an MSc degree in computational linguistics, computer
science, or a related field, will already have some background in
statistical NLP or automata theory, and be a competent Java
programmer.

Applications will be processed immediately. Work should ideally start
no later than October 2014. The positions are limited to three years.

The computational linguistics group in Potsdam is part of the
Department of Linguistics and the university's designated Area of
Excellence in Cognitive Sciences. It provides a dynamic and
international research environment and maintains close ties with the
departments of computer science and psychology. The department offers
a BSc in Computational Linguistics and an MSc in Cognitive Systems,
which is taught in English and covers computational linguistics,
artificial intelligence, and machine learning.

The city of Potsdam is the historical residence of the Prussian kings
and the German emperors. It is part of the Berlin metropolitan area,
one of the cultural and scientific capitals of the world. The city of
Berlin is within commuting distance, and many researchers and students
choose to live there. The region offers a high quality of urban life
at very modest living costs.

The University of Potsdam strives to increase the proportion of women
in research and teaching and specifically encourages female applicants
to apply for these positions.

Handicapped applicants will be given preference in case of equal suitability.
