THE PROBLEM OF MACHISMO IS MORE INTERESTING THAN WHAT I ONCE THOUGHT. I
have recently completed a dissertation on the topic of machismo. I think
we have only scratched the surface of the interrelationship between
machismo, clasismo and racismo. But the relationship is not as
straightforward as we might imagine. We might make a symbolic equation of
the privileged male with the privileged classes and privileged "racial
positions" but the discourses of machismo seem to cut across this symbolic
equation. Machismo was from the very start and until today remains (among
other things) a stereotype for outgroup males. This complication opens up
a new avenue for the study of intersections between class, race and
gender.
