Panel for the upcoming RMMLA Conference, October 10-12, 2002 in Scottsdale, Arizona (USA)
PANEL TITLE & DESCRIPTION:
Discursive Construction of the Middle East since the mid-20th Century
In the aftermath of the September 11th attacks, scholars are called upon to critically examine how the relationship between the West and the Middle East has been evolving. This panel addresses discourses and images that have constructed Western, particularly American, perceptions of the Middle East since the mid-20th century. Scholars, through a critical analysis of a variety of texts, will illustrate how common representations of the Middle East have persisted despite cultural, historical, and political changes in the region.
This panel aims to promote critical awareness of the discursive forces affecting Western perceptions of the Middle East and how these forces can help or hinder the understanding of current events involving Western and Middle-Eastern nations.
