Bangor University, in partnership with Dr John Olsson of the /Forensic
Linguistics Institute/, is seeking to appoint a suitably qualified
applicant for a Collaborative doctoral studentship for three years
commencing on 1 October 2011.
The overall theme of this collaborative programme is, /"Language
variation in electronic messaging: Stylistic parameters that make a
'linguistic fingerprint' problematic."/It involves identifying how a
person's 'tell' [i.e., telling linguistic features that can reveal who
the speaker/ author is] can vary across contexts in general, and
electronic communications in particular. This study is of direct
relevance to the field of forensic linguistics where much work involves
authorship attribution. While the bulk of this work will be in the
medium of English, two additional, pilots will also be conducted in
German and Welsh, to offer this project a cross-cultural dimension; and
the methods to be used include qualitative, discourse analysis. //

Professor Ineke Mennen, School of Linguistics / ESRC Bilingualism
Centre; Professor Carol Tully, School of Modern Languages; and Mrs
Delyth Prys of Bangor University, Language Technologies Unit. The School

Under the terms of the AHRC Collaborative Doctoral Award Scheme, the
successful applicant will benefit from opportunities to work closely
with Dr John Olsson of the /Forensic Linguistics Institute/, Powys Wales UK.
*Eligibility*
Applicants should hold a distinguished academic record, which will
include a first class Bachelor degree (in linguistics or language
analysis) and may include a Master's degree (or equivalent) or relevant
professional experience.Applicants must have a native or near-native
command of English, and a native or near-native command of either German
or Welsh as well as a willingness to become sufficiently proficient in
the other language to conduct research into that language. Furthermore,
the candidate will be able to evidence some measure of academic
expertise in (a) sociolinguistics / variation studies, and (b) forensic
linguistics.Additional desirable criteria include a working knowledge of
the Welsh & English legal system, and some experience in qualitative,
linguistic research.
Full-time Doctoral students who qualify for the full AHRC studentship
will have their tuition fees paid for and will receive a stipend of
£13,590 p.a. AHRC awards are open to UK and to EU applicants. Please be
aware that EU applicants may qualify for a fees-only award. For more
