The Linguistic Data Consortium (LDC) at the University of Pennsylvania
has been sponsoring a biweekly seminar series on issues in language data
and database creation called the LDC Institute. The goals of the seminar
series have been to create a forum of UPenn affiliates with an interest
in language data, to communicate LDC and UPenn experience in data
collections, standards, and annotation, and to work with researchers and
others who may be interested in LDC data or who may wish to contribute
new data to the archives. You can read more about the particular topics
that have been covered at http://www.ldc.upenn.edu/Projects/LDC_Institute.

We are looking for presenters for the 2003-2004 seminar series. Although
the LDC would like to maintain the focus of our series, we are also very
interested in expanding its scope to other related or pertinent areas.
The field of language data is broad and diverse and we would like our
series to reflect that, as well as introduce our students, staff, and
associates to applications and needs for their skills and interests they
might not otherwise be exposed to.

We are open to a variety of topics related to linguistics and language
data including such issues as language education and pedagogy,
language-based technologies, business applications, publishing issues,
etc. If you are interested in participating, we would like to start
scheduling presentations for the spring semester. Seminars typically
occur on Thursdays between 12:00-2:00pm, and the LDC provides food for
these events. However, we can accommodate other times as well. Our
conference room is equipped with a PC, projector, speakers, and
whiteboard. If you need other equipment for your presentation, please
let us know and I'm sure we can provide it. We do request a brief
abstract from our presenters at least a week before the presentation, so
that we can post it on our site and advertise on certain listservs.

Thank you for your time taken to consider our project. Please let us
know if you are interested in participating and don't hesitate to
contact us with any questions.

Thank you,
Kara Rennert
