Teaching Arabic post-9/11

The following topics will be discussed:

The current national scene regarding teaching and learning Arabic, and the
impact on Arabic programs at colleges and universities;

The issues connected with teaching which kind of Arabic: skill prioritization,
and choice of dialects;

The application of proficiency-based assessment principles to Arabic (such as
the Oral Proficiency Interview);

Issues connected with communicative competence versus accuracy; --the
identification of culturally authentic behaviors and their integration into the
learning process;

Code-switching between different registers of the language (and in some regions
between languages--e.g. the Maghrib [North Africa]).
