Students create sign-language movie
It was a crucial scene for Connor McCabe.
Playing the Hare in a movie version of "The Tortoise and the Hare," the Conewago
Township Elementary student began to act out one of the final scenes on Wednesday, in which he realizes the tortoise has pulled ahead of him in the race.
It's an emotional moment for the hare, but rather than yelling, Connor expresses the hare's emotions through sign language and facial expressions.
"Wait!" he signed with a panicked look on his face, and he ran after the tortoise.
Connor is one of four students in the Deaf and Hard of Hearing class, taught by the Lincoln Intermediate Unit No. 12 and led by teacher Aimee Sanford and educational interpreters Kathy Bennett and Allison Mamary. This will be the fourth movie students have created under the direction of Bennett's brother, Mike Wadel, who owns a production company in Chattanooga, Tenn. It will be completely done in sign language, which is good practice for the students, Bennett said.
