Dear Colleagues,
I am so excited to share with you that the 2011 LESLLA Symposium, to be held
in Minneapolis in late September, is now accepting presentation proposals!
For more information and the online submission form, please click here:

This is an exciting opportunity for researchers and practitioners alike to
share their expertise in a setting completely dedicated to second language
learners acquiring literacy for the first time later in life. At the 2011
LESLLA Symposium, we are pleased to announce that Professors Andrea DeCapua
and Helaine Marshall will give a keynote address. Drs. DeCapua and Marshall
have written and presented extensively about instruction for low-literate
learners. They are the authors of the 2011 book Breaking New Ground:
Teaching Students with Limited or Interrupted Formal Education in Secondary
Schools, soon to be released from the University of Michigan Press. More
information about Drs. DeCapua and Marshall can be found at the conference
link above.
Look below for more information about LESLLA and 2011 conference. We hope
to see you in Minneapolis this fall!
Best,
Patsy Vinogradov and Dr. Martha Bigelow, 2011 LESLLA Symposium Co-chairs

What is LESLLA?
LESLLA stands for Low Educated Second Language and Literacy Acquisition Low
Educated Second Language and Literacy Acquisition (LESLLA) for Adults is an
international forum of researchers, teacher educators, and practitioners who
share an interest in research on the development of second language skills
by adult immigrants with little or no schooling prior to entering their new
countries.
The goal of the LESLLA is to share empirical research and information to
help inform and guide further research on second language acquisition for
the low-educated adult population. This research in turn will provide
guidance to education policy development, curriculum development, and
teaching practices in all those countries in which immigrants settle and
most need educational support.

LESLLA 2011 Call for Presentations
Research, Practice, and Policy for Low-educated Second Language and Literacy
Acquisition - for Adults (LESLLA)
Low Educated Second Language and Literacy Acquisition (LESLLA) for Adults is
an international forum of researchers who share an interest in research into
the development of second language skills by adult immigrants and refugees
with little or no schooling in the home country, low levels of literacy in
the native language, and limited proficiency in the language of the new
country.
LESLLA's goal is to share empirical research and information that will guide
further studies on second language acquisition for the adult immigrant
population with limited formal education. This research, in turn, is meant
to influence educational policy development in all those countries where
immigrants settle and are likely to need educational support.
