Research Assistant
CAL Classification: Research Assistant I
Division/Program: Language Testing Division (LTD)
Hours Per Week: 35 hours per week (full time); 17.5 hours with EHLS, 17.5 hours with OPAT; Exempt
Position Available: December 1, 2011
Salary: $38,000-$42,000 depending on qualifications
Basic Functions:
The Research Assistant provides support to two teams, OPAT (Oral Proficiency Assessment Team) and EHLS (English for Heritage Language Speakers).
Description of Duties:
OPAT (50%):
The Oral Proficiency Assessment Team (OPAT) conducts research on and develops oral proficiency tests, provides professional development and training on the use of language assessments, and conducts language program evaluations. Current projects involve conducting research on assessment and maintaining and coding data for a national evaluation of student and teacher language programs; contributing to online courses on assessment, conference planning, and organizing for a Language Resource Center; developing and entering data into databases and conducting research on assessment for test development projects; and other duties as assigned.
PRIMARY OPAT RESPONSIBILITIES:
* Create and maintain databases
* Code and analyze data
* Maintain physical and electronic files
* Develop surveys for research projects
* Maintain project timelines
* Conduct library and Internet searches and other research activities
* Conduct research on technology relevant to assessment projects
* Assist in creation of professional development and training materials
* Assist in conducting professional development workshops on assessment
* Assist in correspondence and coordination with project managers, research assistants, interns, advisers, partners, and other persons involved in projects
* Assist in writing and editing research reports, articles, conference presentations, and other project-related products
* Assist in proposal writing and project development
EHLS (50%):
English for Heritage Language Speakers (EHLS) is an English for professional purposes program that prepares native speakers of critical languages for positions with the federal government. EHLS is funded by the National Security Education Program (U.S. Department of Defense) and managed by CAL. All instruction currently takes place at Georgetown University. CAL's management activities include recruiting program participants, managing application review and applicant testing processes, supporting development of program curriculum and formative assessments, and conducting research on program outcomes and participant language acquisition.
PRIMARY EHLS RESPONSIBILITIES:
* Assist with planning and carrying out EHLS recruiting activities in U.S. cities outside the Washington, D.C. area
* Assist with identification of advertising venues and placement of print and online advertising
* Participate as needed in applicant interviewing, application review, and coordination of applicant language testing
* Conduct research on heritage language communities in the U.S.
* Assist with research on program outcomes and language acquisition at high levels of proficiency
* Support collection and analysis of formative and summative assessment data
* Contribute to maintenance of website and databases as needed
* Collaborate with and provide support to other program staff as needed
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
* Bachelor's degree OR three to five years of relevant work experience collecting and organizing data, conducting research, and/or writing/editing reports.
* Strong oral and written communication skills in English. Proficiency with MS Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work well on a team.
* Must be flexible, organized, attentive to detail, and able to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.
* Ability to travel (up to 25% time, primarily February-June) for EHLS program marketing and recruiting purposes.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
* Bachelor's degree in language/linguistics, education, or related discipline.
* Experience with language teaching/assessment or communications/marketing; experience living abroad.
* Proficiency in a language other than English.
