Sad News from Educational Linguistics at Penn

Thanks so much for sharing this with us.  I, too, did not know that Tere had been ill.  Diana Schwinge and I were very surprised and saddened here.  My condolences to you and other department members as you deal with this profound loss both personally and professionally.

Our wonderful and much loved Professor Teresa Pica passed away in her 
sleep last night. The tears are flowing.... even though we knew in some 
sense that it was coming, Tere's passing is a terrible, terrible shock 
and leaves an enormous, gaping hole in our beloved Educational 
Linguistics program that she worked so hard to nurture and build over 
her 40+ years here at Penn GSE.  A world-class scholar and 
internationally recognized figure in the TESOL field, Tere was devoted 
to her students and was at her happiest when teaching and mentoring, 
whether here at Penn or at one of her many 'stops' around the globe.

Our deep appreciation goes to all of our colleagues and friends around 
the world who have supported Tere and shown your care for her especially 
in these past months.          I am absolutely sure that she knew how 
much she was loved and honored by us, her colleagues and students, past 
and present.

May she rest in peace,
