Dear colleagues,
Every year the HK SAR offers a small number of PhD fellowships, and the current year's call is about to open. This is a fantastic opportunity for the candidates who can make it through the highly competitive selection process, and measures to encourage diversity give an advantage to applicants from abroad.
The Department of English at City University of Hong Kong is keen to receive proposals from students who may wish to apply for this scheme. I'd appreciate your help in spreading the word to your colleagues, and in asking them to pass it on to any bright, ambitious students who may be interested.
More information about the scheme appears below, and my colleagues and I in the English Department would be happy to answer inquiries from interested students.
All the best,
Diane

With the aim of recruiting the best and brightest students in the world to pursue PhD study in Hong Kong, the Research Grants Council (RGC) of the Government of Hong Kong SAR has established the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme. I am writing to ask for your assistance in recommending outstanding candidates to apply for the Scheme through the Department of English at City University of Hong Kong<http://www.cityu.edu.hk/> (http://www.english.cityu.edu.hk/en/index.jsp).
Each Fellowship recipient will receive an award in the amount of USD 105,320 for a 3-year PhD. The financial award consists of a CYC SGS Entrance Scholarship (which covers the tuition and on-campus hostel fees in the first year of research study), and a monthly stipend and a conference and research-related travel allowance.
Students with outstanding academic progress in their later years of study may receive a Research Tuition Scholarship to cover their tuition fees.
The Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme will invite applications for 2018 entry from 1 September-1 December 2017 (12.00.00 GMT +8 hours). The application procedures are as follows:
Step 1:
Applicants should first submit an initial application at the RGC's Online Application System (OAS) (www.rgc.edu.hk/hkphd<http://www.rgc.edu.hk/hkphd>) to obtain a RGC reference number (RGC's deadline: 1 December 2017 [12.00.00 GMT +8 hours]).
Step 2:
Applicants are then required to submit full application, together with supporting documents, to CityU's Online Admission System<http://www.sgs.cityu.edu.hk/prospective/apply/procedures>, and quote the RGC reference number (CityU's deadline: 1 December 2017).
Announcement of Fellowship results by the RGC: March 2018
Firm admission offer with regular postgraduate studentship will be given to selected CityU's nominees, even if they are not awarded the Fellowship by the RGC. The admission offer will be confirmed by the University in January 2018.
Should you or your students wish to know more about the Scheme, please visit our website (http://www.cityu.edu.hk/sgs/hkphd/index.htm) or contact School of Graduate Studies by email: sgfellow at cityu.edu.hk<mailto:sgfellow at cityu.edu.hk>.
