Would you like to…

  * network with international emerging researchers from the field of multilingualism and teacher education?

  * acquire more information on how teachers are prepared to deal with multilingualism in your own and other countries?

  * learn about and apply methodologies of international comparative education?

Yes?

Then join our international project on multilingualism and teacher education!

What is the project all about?

The project aims to bring together emerging researchers from different countries in order to jointly research how teachers across Europe and beyond are prepared in dealing with multilingualism in their classrooms. Meeting the challenge of increasing (linguistic) diversity is a task for nearly all European education systems. In order to adequately address multilingual classrooms, teachers need to be equipped with the knowledge and skills to handle and facilitate multilingualism. Multilingualism thus needs to be integrated into teacher education. This is realized in different ways in different countries, and even within countries that have different teacher education institutions. What can be observed is an increase in awareness and initiatives to meet the challenges of today’s heterogeneous classrooms. For instance, in Germany, the Ministry for Education and Research has provided major funding in order to raise the quality of teacher education (Qualitätsoffensive Lehrerbildung[1]<file:///C:/Users/Francis/AppData/Local/Microsoft/Windows/INetCache/IE/XKK5K6PG/Call%20for%20Participants_final.docx#_ftn1>) in which language education plays a central role.

The project proposed here aims to qualify and connect emerging researchers with regard to multilingualism and teacher education from an international perspective. Participants will research the situation in their own country and compare findings with approaches from other countries.

How will the project run?

The project will consist of two webinars and a face-to-face meeting in Hamburg (Germany). The first webinar will be on the background and challenges for teacher education in the context of multilingual classrooms. Three reform approaches to meet those challenges from Germany, Finland and England will be presented.

The second webinar will be on the methodology of comparing teacher education systems.

The webinars will be followed by a two-day face-to-face meeting where project participants will present the issues of multilingualism in teacher education from their own national perspectives. Furthermore, participants will work together to identify key features for a comparison between European systems. Strategies for a joint presentation at a European conference and a joint paper will be discussed.
