A special issue entitled "Positive Synergies: Translanguaging and Critical
Theories in Education" co-edited by Zhongfeng Tian and Holly Link,
published on Translation and Translanguaging in Multilingual Contexts
journal. For the table of contents, please refer to this page:
https://benjamins.com/catalog/ttmc.5.1.
"The special issue consists of four conceptual articles and ends with
commentary by García. The first article by Khote and Tian explores the
promise of translanguaging in Culturally Sustaining Systemic Functional
Linguistics (CSSFL) to develop meaningful heterogeneous contexts of
learning that benefit multilingual learners in meeting academic challenges.
In the second article, Link and Arango examine translanguaging through the
lens of Freire’s Critical Pedagogy in fostering translanguaging spaces for
immigrant students and families. The third article by Robinson looks at
translanguaging from a Feminist Post-structuralism perspective and offers
suggestions on how to construct a TESOL course to advocate teacher as
agents of change. In the fourth article, Lau explores the connections
between translanguaging and Janks’ Interdependent Model of Critical
Literacy to see how both pedagogic philosophies afford language access and
critique in tandem while harnessing students’ diverse language, culture and
semiotic resources for creative and critical ways of meaning-making ... We
are excited to end with García’s commentary in her piece, “The Curvas of
Translanguaging.” In it she responds to Link and Arango’s question, “What
are ways scholars can incorporate their own translanguaging practices
into their
research, writing, and presentations with other translanguaging scholars?”
by translanguaging throughout her commentary, drawing on lexical and
structural features of English and Spanish. We hope this example of
translanguaging in an academic journal will inspire other researchers and
scholars to do the same. In this way proponents of translanguaging can
further their advocacy for translanguaging as a practice and pedagogy in
educational contexts." (Tian & Link, 2019, p. 2)
