[Edling] New Language Magazine Article: When AI Meets Language Class

Dear colleagues,
We are pleased to share a new practitioner-oriented piece (see attached) published in the May 2026 internet edition of Language Magazine:

In this article, we argue that language teachers need a different conversation about generative AI ¡ª one that moves beyond efficiency and productivity and instead centers pedagogy, ethics, equity, and human judgment. Drawing on a human-centered approach, we introduce the Position¨CDesign¨CEnact (PDE) framework, which encourages educators to think critically about how AI is positioned in classroom ecologies, how learning tasks are intentionally designed, and how AI-supported interactions unfold in practice. Across all three dimensions, we emphasize the importance of criticality, including questions of language ideologies, representation and bias, authority and agency, and ownership and ethics.
We hope the piece may be useful for language teachers, teacher educators, and researchers navigating questions surrounding AI, multilingualism, and language learning in this rapidly changing moment.
