A lovely man and ever generous with his hopes for peace and linguistic human rights. Thank you, Francis, for the links. I too have collected some of his posters over the years, but I think you’ve got them all in your folder. Maybe not these 1986 and 1993 (as usual prescient) letters from Dell Hymes to Francisco, though.

Dear colleagues,

I recently learned the sad news of the passing of Francisco Gomes de Matos in July 2025. He was a pioneer of peace linguistics and a tireless advocate for peace and linguistic human rights. A lovely tribute to him by Jocelyn Wright is available here<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://koreatesol.org/content/tribute-francisco-cardoso-gomes-de-matos-1933-2025-0__;!!IBzWLUs!XwidM9SCnEZ9z1cjApIZnGZSCbuRmb7Dicmu5ohboU1jYmDOnAFIEw1E8DHD0l1nZW2HRUyye0Z2IDcN3FqnRnZ3$>.

I had the honor of knowing Francisco, who was truly delightful in correspondence. He would regularly share his posters and poetry with his friends. I have collected a few of the posters he had most recently shared with me in this folder<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://drive.google.com/drive/u/0/folders/1oZuFVZxkfJ_WkmSJ3cbuJDObJuxPe6lL__;!!IBzWLUs!XwidM9SCnEZ9z1cjApIZnGZSCbuRmb7Dicmu5ohboU1jYmDOnAFIEw1E8DHD0l1nZW2HRUyye0Z2IDcN3Km1_H2C$>. I also thought it would be fitting to share this poem he sent me on the occasion of his 90th birthday:

Good 90 years to reach
There is still more to teach
So i ll keep up poster creating.
Hoping Human Dignity to be elevating
And for Peace to be educating.
All for global Harmony
And for the good of Humanity

May this be a humble plea
Bringing together you and me

Francisco Gomes de Matos
A peace linguist from Recife Brazil

Rest in peace, dear friend.

Best,
Francis
