In a follow-up to this posting, and the response I gave to Richard
yesterday:

There is actually a third party utility available that will allow you to
filter out and essentially ignore the Windows key and other keys that
could potentially cause a crash in E-Run. You can find full information
on this utility in the Knowledge Base section of the E-Prime user
website under the following heading:

1371 - INFO: How to avoid accidental pressing of special keys (Windows
Key, Ctrl+Escape)

PST is currently looking into ways to incorporate special key filtering
in future versions of E-Prime without the need of a 3rd party utility.

Subject: Potential problem with data collection in e-prime

Hello colleagues,

I thought that you might be interested in the following issue regarding
using the keyboard to collect data in e-prime . . .

------------------------------------------------------------------------
----------

FROM Richard Anderson - - Bug Report

In e-prime 1.1 sevice pack 2, under windowsXP:

During data collection, pressing the "windows" key (the one with the
Windows logo) can crash e-prime. I've attached a simple e-studio program
that demonstrates this, apparently, very serious bug.
The program contains a single object: a text display.
Run the program as subject number 1 session 1 (though this may not
matter).
When the text display appears, wait 3 minutes then press the "windows"
key.
The program will crash.

FROM PST

Unfortunately, E-Run lets normal operating system shortcuts like Alt+Tab
and the Windows key (which pressed by itself brings up the Start menu)
to occur. Obviously, this is going to cause the experiment to quit.

Our lead developer is investigating a way to disable these keys at
run-time. However, he has stated that this may be difficult and error
prone. His recommendation in the interim is to change the input keys so
that they are not as close to the win key OR to find an older keyboard
that does not have one.

I hope this is helpful.
