Apropos of Esa's posting, many would say that 'problem solving' was
precisely one of the major concerns of evolutionary biology.  The issue may
be described as one of 'unintentional' yet 'designed'.  (This is of course
a controversial suggestion.)  Dennett's recent book "Darwin's Dangerous
Idea" discusses this in considerable detail.
