some News from the Research Center "Discourse, Politics, Identity" (DPI): Newsletter 1

Dear Colleagues and Friends!
This is just a short letter to let you know what is happening:
Our conference 6th-8th March, 2003, was very successful: about 160
colleagues from 16 countries assembled in Vienna. We had an extremely
interesting discussion, very good lectures and also a good press conference
and presentation of 6 years research funded by the Wittgenstein Price
(awarded to me by the FWF 1996).
Thus, it is time to thank all of you who could come, who travelled from far
to Vienna for these few days, to thank those who wished us well for this
big, final event and could not come, to thank those who sponsored this
event, and those who supported us during the past months. About 90
colleagues, friends and journalists were present on the 7th of March at the
press conference (for information see www.oeaw.ac.at/wittgenstein;
www.univie.ac.at/linguistics; and the science page of www.orf.at). Pictures
will soon be available on our homepage; the contributions to the conference
will be published with DAPCAS, Benjamins. (We will let you know about these
and other up-coming events).
Specifically, we would like to thank the Rector of the University of Vienna,
Prof. Georg Winckler, and the Dean of the Faculty of Humanities, Prof. Franz
Römer, for making it possible to move to the University of Vienna and for
granting us some financial support until the now unemployed members of the
research team will be lucky enough to find new jobs or to be funded by other
projects (we have applied for several projects in the last two months, after
it became clear that we would not be able to continue our research at the
Austrian Academy of Sciences). Most probably, we will get some rooms,
starting with May 1st, 2003(we have to leave the Academy by April 30th
2003). Thus, there is some financial security until end of the year 2003 (we
will have to see what happens then..). As you all can imagine, this was/is a
very stressful time! Hence, the conference, the press conference, our
presentation and "celebrations" provided a wonderful "finish" of 6 years of
intensive, interdisciplinary and stimulating research.
As soon as we know where DPI will be located and what the new address of our
homepage will be, we will send you a second newsletter. We will also keep
you all informed of upcoming events and of new and on-going research.
We have published a broshure about our research 1997 - 2003. Whoever would
like to have a copy (it will soon be available on the internet as PDF file)
should send us their mailing address (to andrea.zwoelfer at oeaw.ac.at) (those
who were present have of course already received such a copy).
