IGALA 5 extension of abstract date and bursaries

The 5th International Gender and Language Association Biennial Conference
to be held at Victoria University, Wellington, New Zealand
3 - 5 July 2008

Travel grants from USA to IGALA5 in Wellington New Zealand 3-5 July 2008.
[For other countries see
website:http://www.victoria.ac.nz/igala5/bursaries.aspx]
We have just heard that the Linguistics Program of the USA's National
Science Foundation has recommended funding for a generous grant to assist
USA-based researchers to travel to IGALA5 in Wellington, New Zealand. We
are extremely grateful to Professor Sally McConnell-Ginet who made the
successful application on behalf of the IGALA5 Organising Committee.
Sally has provided wonderful support for IGALA over many years. Her
application was commended as exemplary.

Administered through the Linguistics Department at Cornell University,
awards will be primarily for graduate students at US universities; young
American postdoctoral scholars will also be considered for support if
funds permit. We strongly encourage USA-based academics to inform their
graduate students of this funding possibility.

The IGALA5 Organising Committee will prioritise applications for these
travel grants using the following criteria: the conference abstract, the
applicant’s potential benefit from attending, and financial need.
Applicants should submit to the Conference Coordinator: Janet Holmes:
janet.holmes at vuw.ac.nz
- A statement of the amount requested and a detailed budget (e.g. airfare
and accommodation).
- A short statement from an academic supervisor or head of department to
explain why the applicant would benefit from attending the conference,
and why the applicant’s institution is not able to provide full funding to
attend the conference.
NSF regulations strictly limit reimbursement to economy class travel on US
flagship carriers or code-share as described in the Fly America Act
http://www.tvlon.com/resources/FlyAct.html. (United and US Airways code
share with Air New Zealand). Individual grants are not expected to exceed
US$2000.

Because this notification has come after the deadline for abstract
submission, we have decided to re-open the website for further abstract
submissions until Friday 14th December 2007. This is available for ALL
abstract submissions (i.e. not just USA-based researchers), since the
IGALA5 Bursary funds will now stretch a little further.
Poster submissions are especially welcome since we do not have many yet.
If your abstract is ready before then, we would encourage you to submit it
(via the EasyChair site for IGALA5 - see the IGALA website at
www.victoria.ac.nz/igala5/). Note that abstracts already submitted have
been sent out for review.

Prospective applicants for IGALA5 travel and conference Bursaries
(including New Zealanders) should consult the information on the website:
