The Department of Linguistics and English Language at Lancaster
University has FOUR Economic and Social Research Council quota
studentships available for its PhD programmes, which have received 1+3
and +3 recognition, part time and full time. (Six were awarded, of which
two were allocated in
2006-7.)
We welcome applicants from the UK and the EU in all
ESRC-relevant areas of linguistics and applied linguistics, but
especially the following areas where supervisors currently have
vacancies:
. sociolinguistics (especially sociophonetics, language
variation, bilingualism, language and gender, language policy,
intercultural pragmatics)
. (critical) discourse analysis
. corpus linguistics (with a sociolinguistic approach)
+3 awards are available for the PhD by Research Only. Applicants
should hold an ESRC-recognised Masters in Linguistics or Applied
Linguistics.
1+3 awards are available for those applying for the PhD by
Thesis and Coursework, a part-time or full-time degree which is awarded
on the basis of taught courses as well as a thesis. See

What is covered? Who may apply?
EU including UK citizens who have been resident in the UK for
three years prior to the start of the award are eligible to receive the
full grant - fee plus maintenance. Other EU nationals are eligible to
receive the fee element only. (See ESRC website for full details.)
