Speaking of publications, I am very pleased to let you know that the Anthology "Women Writing Africa. The Northern Region" has been printed and will be released from
the Feminist Press (New York) in January 2009. This volume is edited by Fatima
Sadiqi, Amira Nowaira, Azza El Khouly and Moha Ennaji. In this volume, the
editors have recovered the lost voices of North African women and, as a
consequence, have restored their rich cultural and historical legacies. The
volume covers six countries - Morocco , Algeria , Tunisia , Egypt , Mauritania
, and Sudan , and contains over one hundred texts from nine languages.
It includes works from 3000 BCE to the present; from an Egyptian Queen's
marriage proposal to contemporary women promoting new marriage and family laws.
In addition to Berber poetry and oral history, much prose in the volume is
original, and many names will resonate with modern readers, including Fatima
Mernissi, Nawal El Saadawi, Assia Djebar, Salwa
Bakr, Leila Abouzeid, and Amina Arfaoui. Important themes include polygamy,
FGM, the veil, education, language power, and political participation. The
volume took 12 years of our lives but it is worth every minute!!!
You or your university may order a copy from The Feminist Press, CUNY.

SUMMARY
The aim of this volume is to offer an International panorama of
gendered and sexualised experiences, with new and original data
collected from a variety of cultural settings and socio-political
contexts. We look at many parts of the world (Japan, Sweden, Poland
Cyprus, Spain, US, Australia, Canada, Hungary) with different
assumptions and expectations, often revealing various research
practices and traditions. Gendered or sexualised discourses are
unstable constructions, in permanent transition, in a perpetual
struggle to gain social legitimacy and to counter the workings of
opposite discourses. They constitute privileged vantage points from
which one can observe and judge power relationships. New identities
are created and reproduced, refused and challenged.
