Although the studentships, as announced, don't mention gender and language directly, I know that the PI, Dr Mark Busse, started the project by being interested in the gender dynamics of the Goroka marketplace and would probably welcome applicants with interests and expertise in that area. Mark is a charming person of the highest academic standards and would be a rewarding person to work with. His students have an excellent track record of getting international positions and awards on completion.

Food Security in a Rapidly Urbanising Country:
The Goroka Fresh Food Market, Papua New Guinea

RESEARCH PROJECT
Applications are sought for two PhD scholarships, each for three years, to run from 2012 to 2015. Successful applicants will carry out ethnographic research in and around Goroka in the Eastern Highlands Province of Papua New Guinea, under the supervision of Dr Mark Busse.
The research project, which is funded by the Royal Society of New Zealand’s Marsden Fund, addresses food security through an anthropological study of the Goroka fresh food market. The goal of the research is to understand the Goroka market as a set of complex social rela­tions from the perspectives of the diverse participants in it rather than through the application of Western economic models. This will be achieved through long-term anthropological research in the marketplace and surrounding rural hinterland. Successful applicants will spend 15 to 18 months doing research in Papua New Guinea. The research will involve both team research and individual research projects which together will provide the basis for individual and joint publications as well as for each student to write a PhD thesis.
SCHOLARSHIP VALUE
Each scholarship includes:
1.      a stipend of NZ$25,000 per year for three years,
2.      student fees for three years (international students at the domestic student rate), and
3.      field expenses (including travel expenses).
SELECTION CRITERIA
Essential
1.      A Masters degree (2nd class, First Division or above, or Merit and above) or equivalent in Anthropology or a relevant social science, or a BA Honours postgraduate degree (First Class / Distinction) or equivalent in Anthropology or a relevant social science
2.      Availability to study in New Zealand
3.      Willingness and ability to carry out 15 to 18 months of research in Papua New Guinea
4.      Availability to take up the scholarship in the very near future
5.      Satisfy the PhD registration requirements of the University of Auckland in terms of qualifications and residence in Auckland for the period of the scholarship (other than the time spent in Papua New Guinea)
6.      Demonstrated writing ability
Desirable
1.      Ethnographic research skills
2.      Experience in rural areas in a developing country
3.      Demonstrated research ability
