>Women Writing the Second World War
>Session ID 13339
>The Second World War lasted six years, crossed continents, and
>resulted in the death of approximately fifty million people. Women
>served in the air force and armed services, and took part in an
>unprecedented level of war efforts that included everything from
>making bandages to building airplanes. Modern technology,
>particularly its production by civilian populations, resulted in the
>'paradox of modern warfare', or the blurring of the categories of
>civilian and combatant that resulted in entire societies being
>viewed as legitimate targets (Overy 2006: 45). Women's Second World
>War writing, which often depicts war not in terms of glory,
>validation, or necessity, but as the destruction of women's lives
>and communities, thwarted post-war nationalist agendas of returning
>society to the mythical status quo of nuclear families, men as
>protectors and providers, and women as mothers flourishing in the
>domestic sphere. While men's war writing was a socially legitimized
>form of discourse, Margaret Higgonet explains that women writing
>about war were viewed as 'trespassers' that transgressed 'many
>taboos' and their accounts of the war were criticized and/or
>suppressed (1993: 206). In recent decades, women's war writing has
>received renewed attention, yet much work is yet to be done in this area.
>
>This transnational panel will examine women's experiences and
>representations of the Second World War as recorded in various
>genres including fiction, drama, journalism, diary, letters, and
>autobiography. Papers addressing the destruction of women's lives
>and communities in the domestic sphere will be given preference.
>Texts originally written in any language are welcome, but papers are
>to be presented in English. 500 word abstract/CV to Ravenel
>Richardson: with the subject line NEMLA 2013.
