The LSE Gender Institute's Autumn events programme is jam-packed in
2012. We have public lectures from renowned professors Saba Mahmood,
Robyn Wiegman and M.V. Lee Badgett as well as a research seminar from
novelist Delia Jarrett-Macauley.
Everyone is welcome to our events, no booking is required (except for
Robyn Wiegman's Wishful Thinking lecture) and all are welcome to the
small drinks receptions we hold after each public lecture.

Secularism, Religion and Sexuality: A Postcolonial Genealogy
Saba Mahmood will give a public lecture on secularism, religion and
sexuality. Mahmood is associate professor of social cultural
anthropology at UC Berkeley. Her research interests focus on
anthropology of subject formation, liberalism, and secular modernity;
feminist and post-structuralist theory; religion and politics; Islam
and the Middle East.

When Gay People Get Married
As the keynote public lecture for LSE Pride Week, Professor M.V. Lee
Badgett will be asking what happens in societies When Gay People Get
Married. LSE Director Craig Calhoun will introduce the lecture, and
John Peart - LSE Students' Union LGBT Officer - will say a few words
about LSE Pride beforehand. Chaired by Wendy Sigle-Rushton.

Wishful Thinking
Professor Robyn Wiegman gives the the Journal of Feminist Theory
Annual Lecture, co-hosted by the Gender Institute. Widely known for
her studied reflections on academic feminism, Wiegman will turn her
attention in this talk to the idioms, affects, and temporalities of
feminist theory. With remarks from Jackie Stacey (Feminist Theory
Journal) and Clare Hemmings (LSE). Pre-registration required.

Fictionalising the Lives of Embattled African Children
Novelist Delia Jarrett-Macauley will join us to present a research
seminar. Using her first novel 'Moses, Citizen and Me', (Granta,
2006) she will focus on contemporary African childhoods both here in
the UK and on the continent. Jarrett-Macauley is a Visiting Fellow at
the Gender Institute for Michaelmas Term 2012.
