New editor posts for Gender and Language (2014-2017)
Call for applications
The journal of Gender and Language is soliciting nominations (by others or by candidates) for the following positions:
- Two journal Editors
- A Book Reviews Editor
Gender and Language is the journal of the International Gender and Language Association (IGALA). The journal encourages discussion and debate about the implications of different definitions of gender and different approaches to analyzing the production and interpretation of texts and speech. It welcomes research employing a range of linguistic approaches (e.g. conversation analysis, discourse and text analysis, ethnography of communication, pragmatics, variationist sociolinguistics, interactional sociolinguistics, stylistics) and from a variety of disciplines, including linguistics, anthropology, women and gender studies, education, philosophy, psychology, folklore, sociology, communication studies, queer studies, literary and cultural studies, as it aims to foster interdisciplinary discussion and dialogue among these disciplines.

The positions have a 3 year term (July 1, 2014 – June 30, 2017) which will start at the end of the current editors' term (Prof. Ann Weatherall and Prof. Elizabeth Stokoe as co-editors; Dr. Georgina Turner as book reviews editor). The current team have done an outstanding job in strengthening the journal over the past few years, and we are looking for a new team who will continue this great work. Applicants should have:
Considerable knowledge of and experience in the field
Considerable experience with research and journal processes (e.g. as journal editor)
Other past experience which would be valuable to the post (e.g. editorial board member)
Strong organisational skills, ability to manage projects, timeliness
Strong communication and interpersonal skills; ability to work with others
An understanding of the aims of the journal and the association

Below are the specific job descriptions for both posts:
Posts of Editor
Routine:
1. Working with the Editorial Assistant (EA) to allocate incoming articles to Editors or Associate Editors
2. Making decisions on articles – whether or not to send to review
3. Writing decision letters based on reviewers’ feedback
4. Working with the EA to allocate papers to issues
5. Liaising with the Book Review Editor about upcoming special issues, new books, etc.
6. Identifying expert reviewers for submissions.
7. Giving final approval of page proofs for publications.
Strategic:
1. Appointing / reappointing Associate Editors, Book Review Editor, Board Members (though we did a thorough board reshuffle a couple of years ago)
2. Making decisions about strategic developments (e.g. number of issues, online first, virtual issues, citations)
3. Inviting papers / special issues or responding to requests about them
4. Promoting the journal on lists, at conferences, and so on
Post of Reviews Editor
•Identifying new and recent publications desirable for review
•Liaising with publishers to arrange review copies, as well subscriptions to catalogues and mailing lists that may assist in identifying publications for review
•Identifying (usually via a 'Call for reviewers') suitable reviewers for titles
•Liaising with reviewers regarding deadlines, progress of reviews etc.
•Reviewing/sub-editing submitted reviews and making decisions on publication
•Liaising with reviewers regarding decisions
•Administration between acceptance and the copyediting process
•Sending pdf copies of published reviews to publishers
