The author investigates thecultural and cognitive aspects of grammatical gender, by drawing on feministsociolinguistic and non-linguistic approaches, cognitive linguistics, researchon linguistic relativity, studies on person reference in interaction andconversation analysis. The study presented in this book shows that the use ofgrammatical gender contributes to the routine achievement of socioculturalgender in interaction and that grammatical gender guides speakers’ thinking ofreferents as female or male at the time of speaking.
