[IGALA] Pop-Up Mentor Programme: Lavender Linguistics Institute

Dear IGALA,



We are excited to once again run the COGEL<https://genderinlinguistics.org/pump/>-sponsored Lavender Languages Summer Institute<https://www.ciis.edu/academics/human-sexuality/lavender-languages> pop up mentoring program for the 2024 Summer Institute (to be held between June 10th–20th, 2024). We are now looking for mentors to be paired with students attending the Institute (most of whom will be undergrads and grad students from linguistics and related disciplines).


About PUMP at the LavLang Institute

As a mentor, you’ll be signing up for a one-time, one-hour virtual session with a mentee. The

purpose of the mentoring sessions is to network and provide more junior colleagues with support on their professional goals and interests, as well as discuss a variety of potential questions that may arise in a professional context (such as work/life balance, international student/faculty, publishing, job applications/interviews, and racial/ethnic minority status). We encourage mentors to share resources that they have found useful to help avoid the common pitfalls scholars typically encounter and to connect on a more personal level. Follow-up meetings once the institute has ended are welcome but not necessary.


Mentors and mentees are paired based on shared interests, backgrounds, and identities, depending on the mentees’ preferences. The larger our pool of mentors, the easier it is for us to make meaningful matches!


Scheduling

Once mentors and mentees have been matched, we will contact both parties to notify them of who they will be connecting with. Mentors will be asked to meet with their mentee once (via Zoom or equivalent platform of their choice) during the LavLang Summer Institute. Attendees will have a free “work day” on June 19th from 6am–1pm PDT, which we suggest might be an ideal date to schedule a meeting. However, if that day does not work for you, you can connect with your mentee(s) to schedule another time of your choosing during the Institute (i.e., any time between June 10th–20th, 2024).
