Dear Bertil,
undoubtedly Septimius Severus and Caracalla had contact with
Goths, as we find the first recruitments of soldiers with Gothic
names attested by epigraphic evidence during their shared reign
before the death of Septimius Severus and Caracalla definitely
seems to have been in Dacia in the first half of 213. But neither
Herodian nor Cassius Dio give us any specific tribe name as
opponents of Caracalla and it is safer to assume that the
transdanubian tribes with which fights are reported were Getae and
not Goths. A Gothic participation in an attack on Roman territorry is
really secure only in 238 AD, when Histria was attacked and
plundered.
