Hello All, I cross post this information abou the East Germanic
Funkenburg in Germany as it is also relevant for the understanding of
Gothic history and culture as well.
Here is the link to an URL about the Funkenburg in Thuringia, Germany.

For a better picture (but not very informative site) see

As usually it is in German, but the main points are:
The castle was build by East Germanic people in about 200BC and
occupied until about 50AD.
Excavations revealed the remains of some 60 houses and defence
structures like two ditches a gate house and a main chieftains (?)
house. The excavations showed that the East Germans on the
Funkenburg had contacts with Celts and Romans. There is also evidence
for executions, human sacrifices and cultic cannibalism!!
The East Germanic people (some kind of early Vandals of the
Przeworsk/Oder-Warthe culture) had migrated from the Oder/Warthe area
westwards up to the Wetterau region of Hesse in West Germany in the
4th and 3rd centuries BC and occupied a large area streching from
Silesia in souther West Poland to Hesse in Germany.
cheers
Dirk
