>The form -theud (people), was introduced for the Gothic name Gut-
thiuda, which in Old Norse developed into Goththjod > Godthjod,
How would gut-Þiuda, the land of the Goths, evolve into goð-þjóð, the
abode of the Gods from a symantic point of view, unless goth means
goð, or normalized spelling, godh.
Gothic words:
gut-þiuda, the Gothic people.
guþ (guth)norm. pl. guda. God
guda-skaunei, the form of God.
guþ-blôstreis, (guth-blostreis) worshipper of God.
>From Wolfram:
THE GUTTHIUDA: THE LAND OF THE TERVINGI AND TAIFALI
Though Gutthiuda means etymologically nothing other
than "Gothic people,"... The word Gutthiuda comes from the tradition
of the Christian Goths, who applied it to the heathen land of the
Goths. If we leave aside this religious dimension, Gutthiuda means
the same as the Got(h )ia of the Greek and Latin sources. That a
barbarian territory is called "the people" or "the family" is not
unusual. Visigothic Spain was considered the "land or people of the
Goths....
Wolfram says that gutþiuda comes from a Christian tradition of
applying it to the heathen land which doesn´t mean that the world
itself is not indigenious, but rather seems to indicate that it is.
Particularly, in the Wulfilas Bible, you will see þuidans as a
synomym for pagan or gentile.
Mark:
33.
jah gawargjand ina dauþau jah atgiband ina þiudom
they shall condemn him to death, and shall deliver him to the Gentiles
42.
wituþ þatei þaiei þuggkjand reikinon þiudom, gafraujinond im,
Ye know that they which are accounted to rule over the Gentiles
exercise lordship over them
key words:
þiudom, gentile
reikinon, from reiks ruler, - rule
gafraujinond, lordship, from frauja, lord
Conversley to þiudom, gentile is people refered to as managein:
jah qemun in Iairikon. jah usgaggandin imma jainþro miþ siponjam
seinaim jah managein ganohai, sunus Teimaiaus,
And they came to Jericho: and as he went out of Jericho with his
disciples and a great number of people,
managein
possible related to:
Sanskrit manu, ON maðr, proto-Germanic mannus
The closest I came to finding a abode of gods, goðþjóð, with Wulfilas
was kingdom of god which is
þiudangardjai gudis:
jah Iesus gasaihwands ina þatei frodaba andhof, qaþ du imma: ni
fairra þiudangardjai gudis.
And when Jesus saw that he answered discreetly, he said unto him,
Thou art not far from the kingdom of God.
Does anyone know in which text the word Gutþhiuda is contained?
