Jordanes was writing in Constantinople, was he not?  Is it possible that the
original _Getica_ was written in Greek and later copied into Latin, thus
increasing the probability that Gapt was indeed a scribal error for Gaut, or
do we know beyond all doubt that not just the copies, but the original as
well was written in Latin?  For example, as far as I know, Jordanes does not
state in the text itelf what langauge he wrote it in; the only time Latin is
mentioned that I can recall is in the beginning when he states that he has
"made some additions from Greek and Latin history."  If the original was in
Greek, it would be likely that Gapt is Gaut.
