Does anybody know when the Crimean Goths became Christians? They
adopted Orthodox Christianity (in contrast to the other Goths who
became Arians) sometime in the 4th century. There is the well known
incident of 404AD, when the Crimean Goths requested a replacement for
their dead bishop Unilas, which gives the latest date for their
christianisation. However, some authors stated that the Crimean Goths
had already been Christians by the time of the Council of Nicaea in
325AD. I suppose if the sea-raids of the mid-3rd century were the
basis for the spread of Christianity among Goths (and Heruls?) than it
would be possible that by 325AD a Gothic bishophric existed on the
Crimea. Does anybody know of other sources or archaeological evidence
to suggest when the Crimean Goths adopted Chrisianity?

cheers,
Dirk
