The J in Jasi < Asi ("Alans") is due to the Slavic intermediate.
In Old Slavic, many words beginning with a-, both herited from
Indo-European or borrowed, get an initial j- (= semivocalic i).
In Slavic languages, the Alans are called Jas, whence in Hungarian
Jasz "Alan" and in Romanian Iasi = the name of a city, lit. "Alans"
(the name of this city, situated in eastern Romania, is in Slavonic
Jasisku torgu "Alanic town", and in Hungarian Jaszvaros "Alan town").
