[gothic-l] Gothic and German Dialects was: EE Jews descend from Goths

Dirk,

Some Dutch dialects (especially the old Amsterdam urban "dialect") have
borrowed richly from Yiddisch vocabulary.

The sentence was: Schpaj nischt in brunem - efscher wesstu darfn fun im
trinken wasser. Some sort of translation (if possible): Do not spit in
the well - later you might want to dare drinking water from it.

Schpaj: spit (spuwen/spauen in regular Dutch and some Dutch dialects)
Efscher: after
Wesstu: willst du
darfn: durven in Dutch, darfen in HG?
fun: von

Greetings,

Raymond/Raginmund, native Dutch speaker, dialectist and Old Low
Franconian (OldDutch) enthousiast

Hello Keth,

I basically agree to all you said above, but your example of
Yiddish caught me out. As a German native speaker I am at a loss to
determine what the above sentence means. Something about a well (Brunnen
- brunem) and drinking (trinken) of water (wasser), but for the words:
Schpaj, efscher, wessto, darfn, fun, I cannot find a German equivalent
and cannot get the meaning of that sentence. Can you solve the riddle
for me?

cheers
Dirk
