Seventh Gothic War 262-270 AD
This eight year long war was probably part
of the ongoing efforts of the Goths to weaken
the Roman empire's defense. It is most
likely that it was not only a question of
short term booty taking. One of the reasons
for the migration from south Scandinavia
of the Goths and other peoples was the
lure of the rich empire. It is likely that
the Goths would not limit themselves to
plundering the periphery of the empire.
In 262-263 AD a Gothic-Erulic fleet under
Gothic commanders Respa, Veduka and
Thervari attacked the shores of Lake
Marmara and Asia Minor. Bithynian cities
were attacked on the return voyage.
A Gothic army under Athala operated
in Cappadocia in 264 AD. Next year
a Gothic-Erulic fleet under Alikak landed
in Herakleia and there is a new land
expedition to Cappadocia. A Roman fleet
was defeated and in 267-268 AD a Gothic
Erulic fleet advanced on the mouth of the Danube
to operate in Moesia. From there they
planned to attack Bysantium. The storm of
Athens has been treated earlier on this
list. In 268 AD at Eurotas Dexippos managed
to defeat the Goths-Eruli. The main part
of the Gothic-Erulic army, however, managed to retreat
behind the Danube.
