According to Babik and according to many other authors it is a very ancient,
but IE river-name. Most linguists agree that its etymology is: _*Wis-tla_ (<
IE stem _*weys-_ 'to flow'). Another etymologies derive this name from IE
_*(s)wit_ 'bright', _*(s)weyd-_ 'wetness', 'to windle', _*weyk'-_.

This name is isolated (no similar river-names in the other regions of
Europe) and it is very difficult (its seems to be impossible at the moment)
to estimate its dating and origin. One seems to be clear: it is not Celtic,
nor Germanic, nor Slavic name. It is much older.
