[gothic-l] The Vidivarii

Focusing on populations dynamics in early Poland.
According to Jordanes (GET. sec. 36) beyond the
Sclavini,on the other side of the Vistula and up to
the Baltic, "ubi tribus faucibus fluenta Vistulae
fluminis ebibuntur Vidivarii resident, ex diversis
nationibus adgregati". The archaeological equivalent
of these Vidivarii seems to be the Dzedzici (sp?) type
materials (6th and 7th c.)[spread from the Vistula to
the Oder] which have affinities both to Slavic culture
(burial rite, many ceramic forms)and to Germanic
culture (house construction). Not until well into the
7th c. do typical Slavic houses appear in the area.
What is the current view in Poland as to these
"Vidivarii"? Are they considered a kind of
Germano-Slavic mixture, or is some other explanation offered?
