are many similar examples available. For instance
until recently it had been thought that when the
Scythians "expelled" the Cimmerians, all Cimmerians
left. But further archaeology demonstrated that only a
part did, and many if not most remained and were
incorporated into Scythia, changing their identity.
And later, it also transpired that in the 13th c. only
a small part of the ruling Cumans (Polovtsi) were
expelled from the steppes by the incoming Mongol-led
Tatars. Most Cumans stayed put and in a few
generations became Tatars. A similar explanation is
certainly worth investigating for the matters Gothic
and Scandinavian we are discussing.*****
