Dear Ingemar,
I am not so sure that the Aquitanian Goths consisted mainly out of
former Tervingi-Vesi. A lot of those remained in Moesia and Thrace
and and served as soldiers in the armies of the Eastern Empire
throughout the fifth century, f.i. the followers of the magistri militum
Plinthas, Ardaburius and Aspar. Alaric had lost most of his followers
after the failure of his first invasion in Italy and after the death of
Stilicho i in 408 he was joined in Italy by the barbarian soldiers of
Stilicho according to Zosimus and by the followers of Ataulf from
Pannonia. The archeological culture of the Visigoths is only
discernible after their settlement in Spain and then it is heavily
influenced by Danubian-Pontic traces (Migration Time II). I agree
with your arguments about Kniva and Ostrogota, though.
Kind regards
Andreas
P.S.: The second great Eastern Gothic realm of Bertil lacks any
serious foundation in the sources, not to say anything about any
continuation into the Rus of Kiev.
