An interesting question brought up by Professor
Pritsak is that of the land of the Goths, Svithiod hin
mikla, which according to Norse tradition was
located on the Tanais River and near the Maeotis Palus.
The Goths who were connected both with the Tanais
and with Odin could have been the Ostrogoths-Greutungi, who had
brought the religion of Odin from the shore of Tanais
to the north and therby won first place in the list of peoples
in the Old Norse tradition.

The recently published, widely reviewed book by Thor
Heyerdahl (_The Hunt for Odin_, but not yet translated
into English) and his co-author Per Lilliestroem brings
up the question of Odin and southeastern Russia.
Heyerdahl says his digs by the Sea of Azov in Russia backed
by Snorre Sturlasons works show that Odin was more than
a myth. Odin was a king, so Heyerdahl, that lived around
Azov before being driven out and taking his followers to
Sweden.

Ancient metal belt holders, rings and armbands of the era
found near the mouth of the Don River were almost
identical to Viking equivalents found in Sweden som 800
years later.

Many of the place names, according to the new book, in
Snorre's sagas match the ancient Greek names for
places around the Sea of Azov, such as Tanais.
