Hello,
the Royal Swedish academy's lexicon of the Swedish language (online
at: http://g3.spraakdata.gu.se/saob/) lists hertig as a Low German
loan (< nom. hertoch, hertoge gen. hertoges), formed of Germ. haria-
and -tuzan.
In the use of the compound there is clearly influence from vulgar
Latin dux in the same usage.
