CALL FOR PAPERS
THE 5TH ANNUAL CONFERENCE OF THE AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF TEACHERS OF
KOREAN (AATK)

August 2-5, 2000
Radisson Hotel, Los Angeles, California

The American Association of Teachers of Korean (AATK) is pleased to
announce that the 5th Annual Conference will be held at the Radisson
Hotel, in Korea town August 2-5, 2000. A two-day pre-conference
workshop for Teacher Training is planned for August 2nd -3rd, and the
remaining two days (August 4th-5th) will be devoted to the main
conference.

Teacher Training Workshop: August 2nd (Wednesday) - 3rd (Thursday)
AATK with the support of the Korea Foundation will provide hotel
accommodations and meals during the two-day workshop for up to 30
participants and 6 leaders. This year's Teacher Training Workshop will
focus on (1) Strengthening and Articulation of K-16 Korean Instruction
(curriculum goals and standards), (2) Integration of Technology in
Korean Language Education, (3) Task-Based Teaching, and (4)
Demonstration of Classroom Teaching. At the conclusion of the
workshop, a certificate of the AATK Teacher Training Workshop will be
presented to each participant. Please fill out the attached
application form and return it by March 31, 2000 to Sung-Ock Sohn
(AATK 2000 Conference Chair). In addition, we would like to invite
experienced teachers who can serve as workshop leaders. Please
indicate your area of interest in the attached form. Late applications
will NOT be accepted. For budgetary reasons, the Association cannot
accommodate any more than 30 participants. Consequently, the strict
observation of the March 31 deadline will also serve as a criterion
for selecting and limiting the number of the applicants. Applications
will be reviewed and ranked in the following order: ELIGIBILITY: A
person must be an instructor of Korean at a recognized institution or
organization. Priority will be given to new or beginning instructors
at a college-level, first-time participants, high school teachers, and
heritage school instructors. In the interest of equity, the number of
participants from each organization will be considered in proportion
to its enrollment status, the maximum number being limited to three.

Main Conference: August 4th (Friday) - 5th (Saturday)
We invite abstracts for talks on any aspect of Korean language
pedagogy. Presentations will be limited to 20 minutes followed by 10
minutes of discussion. In addition to various pedagogy-related issues,
we plan to organize special sessions on the following topics: (1)
Development of multi-media and web-based materials, (2) Content-based
curriculum and syllabus design, (3) Teaching a multi-level and a
multi-background class, (4) Instructional strategies for
Korean-heritage learners (5) Testing and assessment, (6) Teaching of
grammar, vocabulary, reading, conversation, and composition, and (7)
Culture and literature.  ABSTRACTS should not exceed one page and must
be postmarked by March 31, 2000. Late submissions will NOT be
accepted. Presenters including workshop leaders must submit a full
paper by July 10th, 2000 for the publication of the 2000 AATK
Conference Proceedings which will be distributed and serve as the
handouts during the conference. Selected and revised papers will be
published in the new, official journal of the AATK. Hotel
accommodations and meals will be provided for all paper presenters.
The abstracts will be screened by an anonymous committee that consists
of reviewers in different areas of Korean language education.
Notification of acceptance via e-mail will be made by April 30, 2000.
