Let's not forget Sturtevant's 1917 (!) _Linguistic Change: An Introduction
to the Historical Study of Language_, reprinted in a Phoenix Books (U. of
Chicago Press) edition in 1961 and subsequently (at least as late as 1973).
As Hamp's introduction states, "This book is quite out of date...", but its
quaintness is offset by some good qualities. Labov 1972, for example, praises
Sturtevant's views on sound-change.
