And let's not forget about that classic by Hermann Paul: Prinzipien der
Sprachgeschichte, Tübingen 1880. To qualify it as  up to date would be a
little bit exaggerated but every modern reader will certainly be surprised
to learn how much of the methodological and theoretical points illustrated
there still can be quoted today without much amendments. And it contains
the all-time favourite quote of every devoted historical linguist: "Es ist
eingewendet, dass es noch eine andere wissenschaftliche Betrachtung der
Sprache g"abe, als die geschichtliche. Ich muss das in Abrede stellen."
