Hi Carl and Bob,
Fine, I have no objection to explicity characterizing generative
grammar as the mathematical study of the set of strings and associated
structures of natural language in a way that is neutral between
generation and parsing. As you both point out, this use of the term
(more or less) preserves its original historical sense. Now, for
alternatives to generative grammar see Chomsky (1981), (1986), (1995),
and (1998). Happy new year. Regards.
