Applied Psycholinguistics is soliciting papers for a special issue to
be devoted to the topic

Quality of Phonological Representation of Lexical Items

We are interested in reviewing papers that present theory and data concerning:

•	the nature of phonological representations of lexical items
•	ways of assessing the quality of phonological representations
of lexical item
•	the ways in which the quality of phonological representations
change in first language learners with the acquisition of phonology
and with expansion of the lexicon
•	the relevance of quality of phonological representation of
lexical items to normal reading development and to dyslexia
•	the impact of bilingualism and/or second language acquisition
on the quality of phonological representations.

Specific questions that individual papers might address include but are not limited to:

How does one define quality of phonological representations? How
does one measure quality of phonological representations in ways that
distinguish it from orthographic knowledge? How does quality of
phonological representation relate to phonological awareness? Is
quality of phonological representation linked across the two
languages spoken by a bilingual? Is expansion of vocabulary beyond
some point predicated on some threshold level of quality of
phonological representation? Alternately, is quality of phonological
representation a product of the expansion of vocabulary beyond a
certain level? Is there a relationship between quality of
phonological representation and success in early or in later reading
acquisition? And speed of lexical access during reading? Is quality
of phonological representations selectively impaired in any subset of
children with language difficulties or reading problems?

Papers received in response to this call will be submitted to Applied
Psycholinguistics' normal peer review process. Deadline for
submission of papers: 1 July 2000. Accepted papers will appear in
the first issue of 2001, Volume 22.
